1. SETUP

This is the most important overall planning stage. It will define the scope of the website project, such as what the website aims to achieve, it's intended uses by visitors, the type of information it will contain, how often this information will change, key stakeholders, and possible integration with existing infrastructure or systems.

In order to understand the needs of your project we will need to ask you a series of questions that will tell us what type of services you require.

Common website setup questions include :
  • do you have a domain?
  • do you have an existing website?
  • do you require email addresses to be setup?
  • will information be added, removed or changed frequently?
  • what type of information will change and how often?
  • who will be in charge of updating the site?
  • who will be in charge of receiving website feedback and notifications?
  • do you need to provide access to the website files to other designers or developers?
  • do you need any special features such as : e-newsletter, private members area, galleries, product database, online payments?
  • what are your budget and time expectations?
Once we have this information we can customise our website plan to match your needs. We will develop a budget and a schedule for achieving your goals. Because of our range of experience we can recommend alternative ways of acheiving the same result within a range of different budgets.
The next step in the planning process is design planning. During this stage some parameters for the website design will be established.

2. DESIGN

Our design plan will encompasses important topics such as a catalogue of the design materials provided by the client and their use, use of colour, icons and other externally sourced images. It will also be necessary to establish the source and type of website content so that the website design can cater for it.

Common design questions :

  • do you have a logo?
  • do you have a corporate colour scheme?
  • do you have existing promotional material?
  • do you wish to use your own photos?
  • do you want us to find stock images for your selection?
  • what pages of information do you want to provide?
  • do you have your own articles for the website?
  • what menu items would you like to see?

Another aspect of the design planning process involves any of the extra features that have been requested. Image galleries, site blogs and email marketing will require their own design elements that should complement the rest of the site.

The next step is to plan the development schedule

3. DEVELOP

During this step we define the scope of any custom website programming required. The open source software we use rarely requires customisation. However we are happy to workshop changes to default behaviour and include them in our website plan. We will do our best to estimate the length of time it will take to complete development based on the information you provide.

It is important to understand that any major changes requested after development has started may delay the project. It is useful to plan for at least one consultation during development to ensure that the design is proceeding as expected, however discussions will be limited to design and layout issues only. Any request for extra features will require a change to the original plan and budget.

When all of the development tasks have been completed the project is ready for pre-launch testing.

4. LAUNCH

Prior to launching the new website design we will show you a working copy of the website in a test environment. This is your opportunity to take the site for a test run. It is important that every single link is clicked, that every feature is thoroughly tested and that you are happy with the end result.

When you are satisfied that the website project has been completed we will then enable the website under your domain. At this point the site has been officially launched and the project is completed.
